It's in the chassis number, e.g. SJM3 = 8.5 ton (8.6 tonne), 330 cu in engine.
(1986 should be S (sixth) series; previous was E series.)

Some were 220 cubic inch but most were the 330 cubic inch. Is it 4 cylinder or 6?

battery crossover lead

Has anyone got a battery crossover lead . I am having probs with the starter motor not turning over but have just realised that the mechanic has only connected one of the batteries and walked off with the crossover lead . Would that be a reason for the starter motor not turning over , that it is usually powered by 24 volts and is now only connected to 12 volts ? I can't get hold of him so need a new lead which I cant find anywhere ...otherwise I suppose |I will need to get one made up . Basset29

Bridge cable for 2x12V batteries wired for 24V -

Probably quickest & easiest to get a pair of clamp terminals (one positive, one negative) and a piece of cable the right length from a local motor factors or spares shop. Cable insulation can be stripped back using a Stanley knife or similar; easier to do after warming the cable in hot water.

Most 7.5 ton Bedfords, which I assume yours is, are 12 volt not 24. It may be that your truck has two, rather like a motorhome does but still wired as 12 volt. Either way you still need that cable. I got my last one from a breakers yard but am making one at the moment from an earth cable from an old arc welder as I have found it hard to get a suitable length of cable to do the job. Make sure it is tight before turning the key. Many times I have seen battery terminals blown off in a molten flare. (My 16ton truck has 2 600 amp chappies!)

If you are not 100% certain of the voltage of your truck, pull a bulb out. It will be stamped on it.
