New Owner.. lots of questions HiI have bought a Bedford CF Autosleeper for the summer. Have fallen in love with it already but have got lots of questions that I am hoping I can get some help with. By the drivers door on the main part of the van is a key slot that doesnt seem to do anything. I have got the key for it but turning it seems to achieve nothing! The sink taps arent working. Are these simple to fix? I have read about a leisure battery. Where abouts is mine likely to be? There are some double plug sockets fitted but they arent working. Any ideas? Got loads more things to work out but these are the most pressing. Cheers Moogy ---------------------- |

Hi Moog, well done on your purchase- become a cardholder and youll find plenty of advice, but for starters, Leisure battery- look under the floor behind the passenger seat- likely. Sink taps- do they have 12 at the pump? could be a range of possibles, but probably something simple. plug sockets- check that supply distributor box is fused and switched on! The lock that opens nothing. Hi Moog and welcome,Your strange key and lock may have been an alarm system once upon a time, and to continue this snoe white like adventure my second battery was in beside the cold water tank under what would become part of the double bed. Plug sockets there will be a fused switch close to where the supply enters the van, check that the switch is on before trying out the sockets. The pump is driven off the second battery, find that and then check that it is connected up, and that the battery is charged. Its a Bedford so don't expect enjoy yourself to much. My CF2 is poorly My CF2 will not start when I put the key in the ignition the lights come on but the starter motor will not turn can any 1 help |

As you are clearly new to this you are best getting some one just to show you around the gas and electric systems on the van, we must have another Beddie owner near by? The electrics. Start at the hook up lead and follow the cable, you should find an RCD / Fuse box, then the sockets connected to one fuse / trip lighting if any 240 volt ones are fitted are connected to the other fuse / breaker Could you post a few pictues? ---------------------- |

Yes I am new to this and the lights do dim but there is no sound at all I do have some machical skill thanks for any help |

Remove cab engine cover. Under the floor edge below the clutch pedal is the cylindrical body of the starter motor. With the ignition switched to position III (starting), clonk the cylindrical body with a hammer. If the starter spins or tries to work at all then likely it needs new brush gear. If nothing happens then connect a jump lead between the engine block and the battery negative (earth) terminal. If the starter works now then the engine earth lead needs replacing. This is between the engine, behind the oil filter, and body 'floor' below the brake master cylinder. ---------------------- |

Will sort out upgrading. The key thing makes sense as there is an alarm unit under the bonnet that seems to do nothing. Will dig my multi meter out and have a look at the sink pump Thanks for the help. Will no doubt have lots more to ask as the wiring looks erm interesting :) |

Starter Motor has decided to pack up! Does anyone know what type it is so I can get one from Ebay? Engine is 2.3 Slant 1981 |

There's different makes; usually Lucas or Delco on the slant engine but could be Bosch, Magneti Marelli, even Femsa. Could be cheaper to have the old one repaired by a local auto electrician. ---------------------- |

Might be worth checking your earth strap connections before investing in a new starter motor- or replacing it- at 3 quid or so, its alot cheaper and may well be the source of your problems. ---------------------- |

Will try that first. Maybe a stupid question but how do you get at the back of the starter for the connections? I can see about half of it with the engine cover off and looking underneath doesnt look as if it is accessible from there. Sorry for being dim but first time I have had to do anything on this kind of van as I am used to cars |

Starter terminals are accessible from underneath once the front of the van is raised & supported. Don't forget to disconnect the battery first... ---------------------- |

Hey, dont worry about 'being dim', you're learning! I was there once and Ive moved my knowledge of the CF on quite a bit over the last year of ownership- Youll find the more you work on it, the more youll remember and get familiar with the peculiarities of your van. Im sure Phil will vouch for the numerous mistakes Ive made! To get to the starter motor, I just put a ramp under- but being a thin jim, I just need elbow space! Look on the bright side- youll net need to bother with yoga classes... ---------------------- |

Cleaned all the earth strap connections. Still no joy on it. Checked Battery had good voltage and it does. Looks like I have to whip off the starter motor and get it fixed. One thing I have discovered is that nuts are imperial on the van! I have only ever worked on metric euro cars so it is a first. I have a load of shiny sockets that i have never used ! Where are the jacking points on these vans? Any recommendations on where to stick the axle stands? |

Jacking points are front and rear axle's. Axle stands can be put again under these or the chaises it self. have you tried put jump leads from the engine to battery to eliminate bad earth? ---------------------- |

The earth straps look fine,and everything works apart from poor cranking speed and eating alternators. Put a jump lead fron the battery negative to the engine block, if this makes no difference then your earth strap is fine. They can look fine but be corroded internally. ---------------------- |
